Terror By Text

This week, there were yet more US shootings, including one on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill. An associate professor, who was apparently explicitly targeted, was killed by a graduate student. The student run newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel, was praised for its coverage of the event, which went viral (and included a boost from the president). The front page of the paper featured a word collage of texts that were sent while the campus was in lockdown during the active shooter phase of the hunt for the suspect.

The texts struck a nerve for encapsulating just how terrifying such an event is for those who are effected. The coverage reminded us that living in fear is now a regular part of life in the US. Since my wife went to UNC and my son is considering applying for school there next year, this one hit especially close to home.
